Default california legal catalytic converter...??

Hi there, love this site I just found...am so happy now. Anyways, i have a 1998 ranger, v6 4.0l model. I need to replace the catalytic converter. All aftermarket ones ( the affordable ones) are not California legal and I cannot have them shipped here. Through the dealers is costs more than I can really afford. My question is, are there any good cheap replacement for California? or can I, just as I saw in an other post, cut the catalytic converter of and replace with a straight pipe? and if so, what do I need after that?
hey guys, thanks for the help,
chers!

The online autoparts stores are just starting to offer California Legal cats with all the right number stamping, and OEM form factor and fit. One that I've found offered at a couple of sites is made by a company called "magnaflow." It's about 250 delivered which seems pretty fair. There seem to be some other companies starting to get on board with the new CARB laws and offering approved cats also.
Wholesale on the factory, california legal part is 722.00 + shipping. Ouch!

Would anyone see any problems with using one of these aftermarket, cali legal catalytic converters. Any removal and installation tips are welcome too.

I've been on therangerstation.com for years. Just found this forum. Looking forward to it...

all you're gonna get is universal's. they'll work the same way although you might have to do some welding to make it tight.
Magnaflow is good, since all cats for CA are mandatory OBD-II compliant there's no real cheap cat for CA anymore. the older obd-i cats are as ok as it gets.

Flowmaster 3-Stage with dual outs, homemade cold-air intake with K&N cone (and K&N panel filter for stock airbox for smogging). AutoLoc aftermarket power windows and locks, Dual Head Unit with HD Radio and carrying enough tools to fill a tool truck (ok.. maybe a Ford Ranger)
