Default 2001 Ranger thermostat

The thermostat went bad in my 2001 ranger 2.3L and the temp gauge wasn't working, so i replaced the whole assembly and the code went away but the temp gauge still doesn't move was wondering if anyone new what the problem could be. Note: when i took the old assembly out the spring was released but when i put the new one in it was compressed (thought that was right) could this be the problem.
