Default 1999 ford ranger rim and tire question

Hi everyone I have a 99 ford ranger xlt 2wd. It has stock 15 inch rims and 225/70/R15 tires on it. It is about time for new tires and I am thinking of going to larger rims and tires with more tractions. The last thing I found that I could use 255/70/R15 (30x9.5) without rubbing. I am trying to do this without a lift. I like to have a wider ride for more stability. I also need to come up a hill in snow. How can this be done? What else do I need to do? I appreciate any input. Thank you

Your engine size, type of trans, and rear end ratio (diff.) all make a difference as to what size tire you can run. If you are running say a 4 cyl., auto trans, and a 356 ratio rear end (if that was an option) a tall tire would put a load on your engine. I've got a 3.0 v6, auto trans, and a 373 rear end. For tires and rims I'm running 235/75/15 on Explorer 8" x 15" wheels. When my tires wear out I am going to try a 30 or 31 inch tall tire.
At 65 mph my tack reads 2250 rpm. Tell me what you have and are planning on getting.
