Default PLEASE HELP!!! high rpm's low gas mileage

Hello,

Im hoping someone on here can help me. My dad owns a 2003 edge ranger. He says that it isnt getting the gs mileage that it probaly should be. Itis running 60-65 mph and running 2900 rpms. He would like to swap the rear end gears to maybe improve this. The rear end is an 8.8 and i believe they 330 gears. If you know what vehicle would be best or another solution he would be very appreciative.

thank you.

I think he has lower gears than 330s. Automatic or manual? What engine? My 2001 Edge is a 3.0L automatic with 410 gears. These are stock that came with the truck from the factory. Also I think Rangers only come with either 410 or 373 rear gears from the factory. With the low gears I am running about 2400rpm at 65mph. I had an older 94 ranger with a stick and the same engine but had a 373 gear ration and it ran slightly higher rpm at the same speed. There are gas saving mods that can help some, but a good place to start would likely be a tune up and make sure all the emission sensors are up to date. Their effectiveness fades over time and can cost you more at the pump.

I run about 25-2700 at 60, and I have the 4.11:1 gears. What mileage does he get? I get roughly 20 with an AEM cold air intake and cutoff exhaust.

The higher the gears the worse on higway.. I had 3.73s when I had my 32s and it would sit at 2400 at 65.. When I swapped yo 4.56 gears I was at 2800!!! You want lower.. And check this out to see what gears he really has.
