Post 1990 ranger 2.3l temp gauge problem

i bought a 1990 ford ranger 2.3l, and the temp gauge hasnt worked since i got it. Since thats like one of the most important gauges i need to have a temp gauge, i went and bought an aftermarket gauge to read the temp as i am not really interested in getting the stock one to work. I understand there is a temp sensor and a temp sending unit, which one do i replace the aftermarket sensor with, and where exactly is it located? thank you

Sending unit may be located in a relay under the hood. Temp sensor I believe in that is in the thermostat
