I've thought about doing something similar but I've got more than I can handle right now anyhow.

I have some led strips under my dash that I wired into the 'stang dome map lights so that when you flip a switch, that side footwell leds come on with the map light.
My old bubble dome had 'em wired the same way, but they would also come on with the dome light... kinda liked that, but I'm too lazy to come up with a way to mod the 'stang dome to do the same.
