shifting problem - Ford Ranger Forum

I bought a 97 ranger xlt in the summer. when i test drove it the tranny and clutch seemed fine. one day after driving about 45 min to an hour the clutch started to slip pretty bad. it only does this after the truck has been running for a while other than that it works great. now that its cold outside haven't had the problem. could the tranny or clutch plate be overheating if so why. if anyone has any insite on this advice would be greatly appreciated

actually know im having the opposite problem its not getting hot enough just noticed since it really turned cold and havent had the time yet to check but i think the guy who had the truck before me took the thermostat out

The clutch can still be getting hot since its in the drive train, sometimes with the way the clutch is worn it will drive fine when its cold out but when its getting hot it won't grip like it should and will cause the slippage you noticed. I would look into the issue of the motor not getting warmed up, either the thermostat may have been removed or it just isn't working properly, cheap part to replace.
