Default 93 5speed trans

So my buddy picked up a smoki deal this weekend its a 93 ranger splash.. 2wd 2.3.... 5speed It need a new slave cylinder... So after we put a slave cylinder we drive it and...1-3 the trans makes an awful noise... and no 5th... 4th and reverse is perfect... He drives it from my house to his house(bought 10miles)... And 1-3 goes out.... From what somene told me the 93 is the only year the 5spd's will swap... Does anyone know if any other years.. are compatible... And are the other trans from different engines swapable...And advice will help...
