I've seen it done, usually done with an explorer 5.0 from a similar year.

Would an f150 5.0/aod engine/trans fit?
Could get that for $300 and the ranger for free... Tempting...

i know this is old i forgit about this site.. any way i just finished my 88 5.0 swap and yes the f150 5.0 and aod will fit but the problem is the truck trans has a bigger flywheel and the cars have a smaller flywheel witch in turn the car trans is a better swap incace you ever have to take the thing out. but if your looking for 4x4 then a f150 trans is about the only option out their. a body lift over comes this problem
