loss of power - Ford Ranger Forum

hi im new here, and i recently bought a 1988 ford ranger, 2.9 liter, 4x4, manual.
for some reason the truck loses power, like its not getting enough gas, and then sometimes it gets too much and jumps. i have only recently learned to drive a stick, and i know my skills arent that great with one, but even when i hold the pedal smoothly it cuts out until i pump the pedal.
i have taken the truck to a mechanic and he says the computer is not reading any codes.

i was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and what they did to fix it.

you might want to try the fuel pumps. there is two fuel pumps on that truck. mine did that and the low presure one was bad.

check you fuel pressur regulator and you pressure ball

haha thanks for resurrecting this post. i replaced the fuel regulator, the map sensor, and the o2 sensor. problem went away after i installed the new 02 sensor, so im pretty sure that was the culprit.

the problem was that the computer was making the truck run full rich, all the time. i got 7 mpg, and i could see billowing clouds of black smoke out the tailpipe. the only ime it ran great was at full throttle.

ouch! i am suffering the same problem looks like it will be an expensive repair because you replace 3 parts on your truck.

can you guys recommend some sites where you get most of your ford parts? i know one but i wanna compared it with others so i can see which one offers the most affordable and reasonable price.

Most of those parts are good to go from your local auto parts store. You can compare prices at Rockauto.com or summitracing.com though. Both places are outstanding

honestly i would start with the least expensive part first, which in this case i think was the O2 sensor(which i did last :/ ). i replaced them each one at a time to see which made the biggest difference, and after the o2 sensor was replaced the truck ran great. replaceing the regulator made no difference at all.

after o2 i'd try the map, then the regulator last. i think the o2 and map were something like 40 dollars at autozone. you could get oem parts i guess but i havent noticed any difference in quality between aftermarket and oem.
