I also checked the oil and it looked normal. How milky would it look if there was coolant in it? easily noticeable? I know about the condition but have never seen it.

look for mily muck around the oil cap even, since it seems like a small amount may be hard to see but keep chking the water level in radiator and overflow tank. also if you see moisture out of tailpie like excess smoking

is what it reminds me of and I replaced the head gasket on our 87 2.3 and it was a peace of cake hardest part was getting the fuel lines disconnected.If you do replace the gasket remember to get new head bolt's as they are torque to yield item's.

You sure its a HG? How big was the puddle? Are you sure its coolant? I know that cars will leak water throught the exhaust which is a normal part of the combustion process. Just an idea.
